THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OLDER PERSONS
FOR THE FIRST TIME CELEBRATED IN TURKMENISTAN
The International Day of Older Persons, 1 October, designated by the 45th session of the UN General Assembly in its resolution of 14 December 1990 has been given recognition in Turkmenistan by the law signed by the President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov, on January 18, 2008.
On 1 October, the International Day of Older Persons was celebrated in all etraps, cities, and the capital of Turkmenistan – the city of Ashgabat. This day was marked by celebrations, concerts and meetings of people representing various generations.
During the celebration of the International Day of Older Persons, the elderly men and women were greeted by the President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov, as well as the Government of Turkmenistan, and representatives of international organizations, national associations and the young people of Turkmenistan.
The proclamation of the International Day of Older Persons has become another occasion for the younger generation to pay attention to and show concern for the veterans of the Great Patriotic War and the elderly people, to pay tribute to their heroic feats and labor achievements, which laid the foundation for the economic development and prosperity of the Independent and Neutral Turkmenistan.
The people of the older generation are an example for young people in showing patriotism and love for their Homeland, the ability to keep up faith and optimism even in the most difficult conditions.
